Nasdaq futures indicated an upward trajectory on Wednesday in anticipation of a report on U.S. consumer inflation, with technology companies spearheading the advances after robust performances from CoreWeave and Super Micro Computer. Futures for the Nasdaq 100, S&P 500, and Dow Jones Industrial Average experienced increases of 0.7%, 0.3%, and 0.2%, respectively, in recent trading. Yesterday, the major U.S. stock indexes experienced a decline, while oil prices increased for the second consecutive day this week. Today, market participants will direct their attention to the 8:30 a.m. release of the July CPI inflation report, a key indicator that will influence expectations regarding the Federal Reserve’s forthcoming decisions on interest rates. Last Friday’s unexpectedly weak July jobs report alleviated investor anxiety regarding a potential imminent increase in the central bank’s key rate; however, a strong inflation reading could reignite those concerns. Economists anticipate that inflation increased by 3.4% year-over-year in July, indicating a slowdown from the 3.5% recorded in June.
Meanwhile, the “core” CPI, which omits the fluctuating prices of food and energy, is projected to have risen by 2.5%, a decrease from 2.6% in June, marking its lowest level since February. Ahead of the reading, the 10-year Treasury yield, which influences interest rates on a variety of consumer loans including mortgages, was above 4.66%, down more than three basis points from Tuesday’s close. Technology stocks led premarket gains Wednesday, with CoreWeave surging 18%, Super Micro Computer rising 9%, and Lumentum Holdings increasing 8.5% following quarterly results issued after the bell yesterday. Shares of Coherent, Lumentum’s rival in the optical communications space, jumped 6.5% ahead of its earnings report after markets close today. The Roundhill Memory ETF experienced a 5% increase, driven by gains in its components.
Micron Technology, Sandisk, Western Digital, SK Hynix, and Seagate Technology saw their stock prices rise between 3% and 4.5%, while Samsung Electronics recorded a notable surge of nearly 7% in South Korean trading. The broader iShares Semiconductor ETF experienced an increase of nearly 2%. Most of the Magnificent Seven tech giants experienced gains in premarket trading following a predominantly lower close on Tuesday. Shares of Alphabet advanced less than 1% after the Google parent led the group lower yesterday with a nearly 4% decline. Shares of Mediterranean restaurant chain CAVA Group surged 12% following quarterly results last nite. Cisco Systems rose nearly 2% ahead of its earnings report after markets close.
Crude oil futures experienced an uptick as hostilities intensified in the Middle East, highlighted by Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen launching an attack on a cargo vessel in the Red Sea, while U.S. forces responded by targeting a container ship in the Gulf of Oman. WTI futures, the U.S. benchmark, increased by 0.5% to $83.60 a barrel, whereas Brent futures, the international benchmark, rose by 0.3% to $89.15. Gold futures increased by 0.7%, reaching a price of $4,470 per ounce. Bitcoin was priced at approximately $64,200, reflecting a slight increase over the preceding 24 hours. The U.S. dollar index, which monitors the value of the greenback relative to a selection of foreign currencies, remained relatively stable at 99.80.
