Nasdaq Futures Updates

Stocks indicated a mixed opening on Thursday, as futures for the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose following three consecutive record closes, while futures for the Nasdaq 100 declined due to a drop in shares of memory chipmakers. Futures for the Dow and S&P 500 indicated increases of 0.3% and 0.1%, respectively, whereas futures for the Nasdaq 100 experienced a decline of 0.7%. Yesterday, the blue-chip Dow concluded the trading day with a 0.5% increase, thereby extending its winning streak to five consecutive sessions and achieving three straight record-high closes. It reached a new intraday record alongside the S&P 500, although the benchmark index concluded 0.2% lower.

The Nasdaq experienced a decline of 0.8%, marking the end of a four-session winning streak for both the tech-focused index and the S&P 500. Weighing on the Nasdaq early Thursday were shares of Western Digital, which sank 15%, and Sandisk, which fell 11%, as investors mulled their earnings reports issued after markets closed yesterday. The Roundhill Memory ETF experienced a decline of 6.5%. In other post-earnings developments, shares of Datadog experienced a decline of 22%; AppLovin saw a decrease of 19%; Honeywell Aerospace retreated by 15%; while DoorDash recorded an increase of 2%. Shares of SpaceX rose 3% following a nearly 14% decline yesterday, as investors processed the company’s initial results as a public entity under the leadership of Elon Musk.

Approximately 911 million shares of SpaceX stock, valued at around $98 billion based on recent prices, will become available for trading on Thursday, following the expiration of trading restrictions. This event occurs two days subsequent to the company’s inaugural earnings report as a publicly traded entity. All of the Magnificent Seven mega-cap tech firms pointed higher before the bell except for Microsoft. Yesterday, the septet concluded with mixed results, as Nvidia led the gains at approximately 3.5%, while Alphabet experienced the most significant decline at 4%. Oil prices experienced an uptick as investors maintained optimism regarding a potential agreement between the U.S. and Iran aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz.

U.S. benchmark West Texas Intermediate futures increased by 0.8% to $75.80 per barrel, whereas global benchmark Brent crude futures saw a rise of 1% to $80.25. The 10-year Treasury yield, a critical determinant of interest rates across various consumer loans such as mortgages, stood at 4.64%, reflecting an increase of two basis points from Wednesday’s close. The U.S. dollar index, which monitors the value of the greenback relative to a selection of foreign currencies, increased by 0.1% to 99.76. Bitcoin was trading around 64,500, down slightly over the past 24 hours. Gold futures increased by 0.5%, reaching $4,330 per ounce.
