Nasdaq futures exhibited a mixed performance on Monday, with technology shares driving the gains, following a third consecutive week of increases for both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite. Futures for the Nasdaq 100 and S&P 500 indicated increases of 0.5% and 0.1%, respectively, whereas futures for the Dow Jones Industrial Average showed a decline of 0.2%. On Friday, all three leading U.S. indexes experienced declines; however, only the Dow concluded the week in the red, thereby ending a two-week winning streak. Indexes declined, partly due to the U.S. Census Bureau’s retail sales data, which fell by 0.6% in July, contrary to economists’ expectations of a 0.1% increase.
This week, investors will receive additional insights into American consumer spending as major retailers, including Walmart, Target, and Home Depot, report their quarterly results. Stocks associated with memory technology experienced notable increases prior to the market opening on Monday. The Roundhill Memory ETF advanced 4.5% as components Sandisk, Western Digital, SK Hynix, Micron Technology, and Seagate Technology surged roughly 2.5% to 5%. Shares of the Magnificent Seven mega-cap tech firms exhibited a mixed performance in premarket trading, following a predominantly lower finish on Friday. Shares of Broadcom, the world’s sixth-most-valuable publicly traded company with a market capitalisation of nearly $1.9 trillion, pointed up 1% after dropping nearly 6% in the last session to pace Nasdaq 100 and S&P 500 decliners.
SpaceX shares, which closed 1% lower Friday and remain below the $150 opening price logged on IPO day two months ago, were little changed before the bell. The U.S. dollar index, which monitors the value of the greenback against a selection of foreign currencies, fell by 0.2% to a near three-month low of 99.48. This decline comes as investors perceive only a 31% probability that the Federal Reserve will increase interest rates at its upcoming meeting, as indicated by the CME Group’s FedWatch tool. Crude oil futures experienced a modest increase as discussions between the U.S. and Iran regarding the complete resumption of shipping thru the Strait of Hormuz seemed to have reached an impasse.
WTI futures, the U.S. benchmark, advanced 0.3% to $82.60 a barrel in recent trading, while Brent futures, the international benchmark, were up 0.7% to $89.10. The 10-year Treasury yield, a key determinant of interest rates across various consumer loans such as mortgages, stood at approximately 4.69%, reflecting a decrease of less than one basis point from the previous Friday’s closing value. Gold futures increased by 0.5%, reaching $4,460 per ounce. Bitcoin was valued at approximately $63,600, reflecting a modest increase over the preceding 24 hours.
